How I'm Saving Today

This week I have spent very little which is great! I ate all my meals at home or brought them with me to work and school, except for two. Those eating out costs can add up really quickly so I try to plan ahead as much as possible and bring food with me.

I also made a little money this week! I received a check from Sinclair Customer Metrics for mystery shopping I did last month, cashed out a gift certificate for CVS from Checkpoints, cashed out a Citibank gift card from Opinion Outpost, and cashed out a gift card for Safeway from Daily Feats. Wow! That's a lot in one week! I guess I will be making an extra payment on the credit card this month!

Checkpoints App: Gift Cards for Scanning Barcodes

I am constantly on the lookout for fun and easy ways to make a bit of extra cash (those bills won't pay themselves!).

I stumbled accross the Checkpoints App for iPhone and Android just a few months ago and already I have redeemed gift certificates to CVS!

The app is super easy to use, is free, and allows you to choose which rewards you want.

Here's how it works:



1. Go to to the Checkpoints site or look it up in the Android Market or the iPhone App Store.

2. Install the free app. **Enter the bonus code "alice919" for bonus points when you sign up!

3. Find the store you are at and check in for two points. It especially works well in grocery and drugstores.

4. Find the advertised items, scan the barcodes, and get points and coins. No need to buy the item!

5. Play the Jungle Scratcher or Lotto games to turn your coins into bonus points.

When you have as little as 300 points you can start to get prizes. I personally have decided that the CVS gift cards get you the most bang for your points as they go for 300 points per dollar and you can start at 600 points for a $2 gift card. The gift card is emailed to you and is easy to print and redeem. It holds its value like a regular gift card. They also offer gift cards to other stores like Shell gasoline, Subway, and the Home Depot to name a few. They also have other rewards that are not gift cards, like electronics.

How I'm Saving Today

Yesterday I picked up some free toothpaste at Rite Aid (free with coupons and +Up Rewards) and went to Safeway to stock up on some items which were on sale from their Mix & Match sale for super cheap. I saved a ton and am getting many free Powerades from the coupons I bought on Ebay. My hubby is an athlete and we go through lots of Powerade and Gatorade so when I saw coupons on Ebay which would make them free with a sale, I jumped on it! Also, I saw that Ann Taylor Loft is having a huge sale online. I found great deals and put them in my online shopping cart, then I realized that I still can’t justify the purchase (even though its a good deal) because it’s not in my budget. Goodbye online shopping cart. Hello staying on budget!

Saving Money When Shopping Online

If you shop online, there are some great, easy ways to save.

My favorite cash back site is Ebates. Just log onto the Ebates site, find the participating store you are shopping at, and click the Ebates link to get to the site. Then shop as normal and you will automatically get up to 25% back on your purchase, though most stores average about 5% cash back. They even have some promotions where you can get double cash back. Sign up through the link below and get $5 automatically as a signup bonus! Ebates works with a long list of well known companies so you will likely find the store you are looking for. Additionally, they also include promotion codes which you can you at online stores in addition to getting cash back through Ebates. Your cash back is based on the price you pay after the promotion code.



I personally have been paid by Ebates for my online shopping and they send you a check every three months automatically. I don't shop online too much so the last check I got was $3.51 but that was from one purchase and every little bit helps! With that first purchase Ebates also sent me a $10 gift card to Target as my signup bonus since that was the promotion they were running at the time. So it definitely works!

Another site for discounts when shopping online is Retail Me Not. They are a free site where you can find promotion codes for free shipping, free gifts with purchase, and discounts when shopping at a large list of retailers. The codes are generally good and have rankings for which work the best. The best part about promotion codes is that they can be used in conjunction with cash back programs such as Ebates or points for shopping programs such as MyPoints and Memolink.
