How I'm Saving Today

Honestly, I guess this week the post should be titled "How I'm Spending This Week." Ugh.

After a long 19 hour drive to Louisiana with my dad, we finally made it to Baton Rouge. We spent the ride buying gas (a lot) and listening to a spy novel on CD which I had picked up at the library before we left. Books on CD definetely make a long drive pass much faster. I packed some snacks and made a couple of sandwiches to eat in the car so I did farily well on saving money on the drive. I only bought 2 meals total over two days since I had brought food with me and the Super 8 that we stopped at in Knoxville had a complimentary continental breakfast. Yay!

Now for the spending part. Well, we all went out to eat a couple of times and that definetely adds up. Especially when you are already strapped for cash. We also swung by Old Navy to get a couple of pairs of khakis which my husband needs for his Athletic Training observations, since he needs to wear a professional uniform for working with the athletes. Luckily, I had planned ahead for this purchase and had two $10 off a $20 purchase coupons from previous Old Navy purchases. We saved some money but unfortunately Old Navy won't let you use the coupons together so we ended up paying more out of pocket.

And to clinch it all, my husband's car got a flat tire the night we arrived in Baton Rouge. Thank god it didn't happen in the middle of Mississippi (nothing against Mississippi though)! So we tooled over (on the spare tire) to the Firestone tires convienently located next to the Old Navy. We ended up getting two tires so they would wear more evenly and because they were buy 1 get the 2nd 1/2 off. So thats a great deal but still an unexpected $200 dollars to shell out. So now we have a maxed out credit card bill, joy. Hopefully it won't stay that way for long.

With all this upheaval over college costs for my husband, my parents graciously offered for me to move back in with them while I finish grad school over the next 6 months and look for a job in Baton Rouge. I had been wrangling with my rental office about breaking the lease and finally, after a call to the county Office of Landlord-Tenant Relations and a nice letter, they agreed to let us break the lease with only 30 day's notice and 1 month's rent in a penalty fee. They previously said I should give 60 days notice and two month's rent in a penalty, which would mean an exorbinant amount of money to suddenly come up with in March. So this works out much better in the long run. I had to shell out the penalty fee from our savings so now we are wiped out temporarily.

I hate the feeling that we don't have the security and safety blanket of our credit card or savings accounts. That makes me so nervous yet grateful that we had them in the first place. Over the next two months our financial situation will be in flux as we create a new budget and handle some large out of pocket expenses (like the lease penalty fee) and then try to build back up our savings.

Another big relief is that I am getting a bit of extra cash in to help us out through these lean times. Just today and yesterday I received almost $50 from mystery shops I completed in December and January. Also, by the end of the week I will be receiving $133 from Textbooks.com from selling all our old textbooks. Great! Every little bit helps.

How are you saving today?

How Much Do You Owe?: Stop Drowning in Debt

I have been reading a lot of personal finance blogs over the last few months and one that I consistently follow is Yes, I Am Cheap. The author writes anonymously but she's relateable, funny, and chock full of information so it's a double winning blog for me.

This week Yes I Am Cheap ran an article called Get Out of Debt in 2012: How Much Do You Owe? She writes about looking your debt square in the face and making a plan to get out from under it, something that I have learned from her blog. Though it is scary (eek! look at how many digits that number has!) it's always best to begin somewhere and know where you are when you begin.

I have followed Yes I Am Cheap's example for a few months now and have been diligently tracking all my debts and tracking my payments. I keep it all in a handy dandy Google Doc and even made a graph to see my progress visually. If you don't already do this, I highly recommend it. Here's what Yes, I Am Cheap has to say about it in an excerpt from Get Out of Debt in 2012: How Much Do You Owe? and you can read the entire article here.

"Since getting out of debt is so simple, why aren’t we better at it? This part really IS simple. It’s because we
don’t have a plan, or a roadmap for getting to where we want to be. I’ll use an analogy from my boss: it’s like drive to California from the East Coast without a GPS. You know that if you drive west long enough you’ll get there eventually, but it would probably be easier and quicker to get there with a GPS.

This is your GPS...

If you’re a long-time reader (love you), you might follow my monthly posts (usually on the first or second of the month) where I spell out my debt, how it was impacted and how I made some extra money during the month. This is the cornerstone of my blog, because it’s also the cornerstone of my debt reduction plan. If you’ve never really sat down and look at all of your debt in one place, you may need to prepare yourself. Your first task is to gather all of your debts and put the totals together somewhere.

I used to compartmentalize my debt. I owed student loans this much on this loan, this much on that loan, oh and this much on the other loan. I owed Macy’s this much every month. I owed the MBNA MasterCard that much per month. It wasn’t until I really sat down and wrote down my how much I actually owed each of my creditors and what my minimum monthly payment for each of them was that it really hit me. I was in some deep shit and the money that I threw at my debt every month was never going to plug the hole. Seeing all of your debt in one together in one place gives you real and lasting perspective. It’s like a having ice cold water tossed in your face in the middle of winter."

Do you track your debts and your progress in paying them off? If so, how do you track them? Leave a comment below. I would love to hear your experience!

Save Money with Free Haircuts and Discounted Beauty Treatments!

I'm guest posting today over at the Krazy Coupon Lady!

Below is an excerpt from my article and go here to read the whole thing.

It’s Worth a Try: One Simple Way to Save on Hair & Beauty Treatments!

We’ve all been there. Bangs growing out, split ends, color fading, and an empty wallet. What’s a fabulous broke gal to do?

Get a free haircut! Yes, it’s entirely realistic to get free or deeply discounted haircuts AND beauty treatments. You just have to know where to look.

A few years ago I had a regular stylist at a mid-range salon that I was quite happy with. One day, I called to make an appointment and she was no longer working there. So I booked an appointment with another stylist. Unfortunately, I wasn’t terribly excited about that cut and started on a relentless hunt for a new stylist.

Along the way, I had way too many bad haircuts. I even booked an appointment at an expensive salon thinking that a higher price meant a better cut. To my horror, the stylist gave me a mullet. It was awful! To make matters worse, I was broke after shelling out all that money for a cut that I really couldn’t afford.

As I grumbled to myself about that bad experience, I drove by a beauty school and it dawned on me: Salons and cosmetology schools all around the country offer free or discounted services to clients who are willing to work with their newest employees or students. It sounded scary, but it was worth a try!

I had been so impoverished by expensive yet disappointing salons that I threw up my hands in defeat and walked into the beauty school for my next haircut. And you know what? I loved my haircut! I only paid $12 at my local Paul Mitchell school and got a great cut!

I did some research and found that there were many beauty schools in my area that offered deeply discounted services. I even learned that my regular salon offered FREE haircuts on Sundays with stylists who were going through the salon’s training program. Some of these stylists had been cutting hair for a few years and were just new to the salon, so I could get great cuts and only pay the tip!

Read more here...

So where do I go for my free haircuts?

PR@Partners offers free haircuts on Sundays at their Tenleytown location. Just call and ask to book an appointment for "Tenley Studio" on a Sunday. They don't advertise it on their webpage but they have a sign up at the location, which is how I found out about it. This is usually where I go for my free cuts. I tip the stylist based on the full amount of the cut (about $40) and expect to be there around an hour. The stylists are new to the company though some have been cutting hair for a few years.

Paul Mitchell has schools in Tyson's Corner and in Rockville which offer discounted cuts by students. I've been to the Rockville location and had a good experience there as well.

You can check out Aveda Institutes in Chinatown for discounted haircuts, beauty treatments, and massages.

And for more discounted massages you can go to Potomac Massage Training Institute on Wisconsin Avenue in DC.

How I'm Saving Today

So my husband is now an official Bayou Bengal! He flew down to Louisiana State University to pursue his dreams and begin the Athletic Training program there. I'm so excited for him but I miss him tons. Luckily I am planning a road trip next week to drive his car down there and visit him.

All this school stuff has taken a toll on our budget and we have been shelling out school fees, plane tickets, and buying books. Luckily we have some savings but some has also gone on the credit card. We will sort it out in the budget and pay the card back ASAP.

Overall I have only spent about $6.00 this week on miscellaneous drug store purchases (using coupons though!) so that's definetely good. I also just bought these super cute shoes on Hautelook using a credit I already had so I didn't have to spend a dime today. I bought a Plum District $50 voucher to Hautelook for $25 months ago, and since then have bought and returned two pairs of shoes. The shoes were fine, they just didn't fit well (I have picky feet) or didn't look like I thought they would in person. Luckily Hautelook's customer service had no problem taking my returns and allowing me to convert the Plum District voucher into a regular old credit so it won't expire. So here's hoping the third time's the charm! These shoes would be great for work or play, no?

Oh, and if you don't know about Plum District, it's a local daily deal site for women. They gear some of their deals towards moms but I have found great stuff on there for me (not a mom)! You can sign up through my link here and get a $5 credit to spend on whatever you want!

Mystery Shopping Company Review: Sinclair Customer Metrics

Sinclair Customer Metrics (SCM) is a legitimate mystery shopping company which I have conducted many mystery shops for over the past few months. I have been promptly paid for my efforts and the shop forms are easy to complete.

Sinclair Customer Metrics
is not a huge company, like Marketforce, but they contract with a range of companies for which they have available shops. In my area they have shops ranging from banks to retail stores to quick serve restaurants. The company usually pays reimbursement up to a certain amount for your purchase and will give you a shop fee on top of that. If they are having a hard time getting a shop completed, for example a location in an airport, then they will offer a bonus on top of the regular fee. I completed a shop for them at an airport (past security) when I went on vacation a few months ago and got paid $20 + reimbursement because I got a bonus! Pretty sweet for only 10 minutes of work.

Sinclair Customer Metrics uses an online shop assignment system which is easy to use and will email you when they add new shops in your area. Their online shop reporting form is simple and uses a mix of free-form text boxes and bubbles to select. Additionally, receipts can be uploaded into the web reporting form. Sinclair requires their shoppers to complete online tutorials prior for each company they provide shops for. The tutorials are easy to understand and give the specific guidelines for the shop. Some shops are more complicated than others and the shop fee will usually reflect the level of difficulty.

Sinclair Customer Metrics pays by check each month for the previous month. There is no need to request a payment as the company automatically sends you the check. I have had an enjoyable time conducting shops for this company and urge you to sign up also!

You can sign up here to become a mystery shopper for SCM. Happy shopping!

How I'm Saving Today

Well, this week has been crazy. On the plus side, I bought plane tickets to my sister's bachelorette party in Florida with the cash I had been saving up. Yay! It's a great feeling to have saved for a goal and met it!

Also, my husband got accepted to Louisiana State University! Geaux Tigers! We are super excited but because they just now got back to him (like a month later than we had expected) and because classes start next week (eek!) we have been crazy busy with financial aid, admissions paperwork, etc. We even had to fly him down to Baton Rouge so he could attend mandatory orientation tomorrow. Phew! But boy am I glad that we had been saving and had the money to pay for the tickets without putting them on the credit card :)

This is all exciting but it means that we will be living in two different states for a while :( which sucks but he gets to pursue his dreams and his education which is great. So its bittersweet. Also, because we will have two households we will have to tighten our belts even further. I sure hope financial aid comes through! Geez school is expensive!

I Got Paid!

Online surveys and mystery shopping get a bad rap. Many people think that they are just scams but there are really some great (and legitimate) companies out there that will pay you for your time and effort. And to prove it, here's what I earned from online surveys and mystery shopping last month, among other endeavors. I completed these mystery shops and surveys in the previous month (or earlier) and received the payment this month.

What am I doing with this extra cash? Almost all of it went to my ING Direct online savings account to save for travel to my sister's wedding and related expenses. I like having the online savings account because it takes a few days to transfer into and out of the account so I can keep the money separate and make it hard to touch.

And the rest of it? The money that didn't go to the savings account went toward paying down my Amex credit card balance. Also, I paid myself back for the mystery shopping purchases that I put on my credit card and got reimbursed for.

When I get a gift card as payment, I select a gift card for something I am going to buy anyway (like groceries or gas) and transfer the gift card amount out of that budget envelope and into the savings account.

December 2011
$125.18 from Coyle Hospitality for a mystery shop (mostly reimbursement)
$39.20 from Market Force for mystery shopping
$51.15 from Bestmark for mystery shopping (use referral ID MD5921 to sign up)
$20.33 from miscellaneous product rebates
$5.00 from Magazines.com promotion (no longer available)
$21.50 from WeReward
$10.00 from Opinion Outpost for surveys
$10.00 Safeway Gift Card from Daily Feats
$48.25 from KCL Contributor Network (for selling an article)
$20.00 from Serve.com

The mystery shop earnings include both reimbursements and payment fees, so the total fees earned (excluding reimbursements) was $33.50.
Total earned in December 2010 (excluding reimbursements): $168.58

I post these numbers not to brag but to show that you really can make money this way. If I can do it so can you. Debt freedom here we come!

Happy New Year!

Welcome to 2012! January is a time for reflection over the previous year and to plan for the next. I don't always make new year's resolutions but this year I decided that I have a few things that I would like to focus on this year. Here they are:

1. Get in shape. I am going to make full use of my gym membership and get moving this year! Also, I will get back on using a food diary since that really helps me to watch what I eat and make wise choices. I like the Fat Secret app (bad name, great app). It's free too which is the best! You can find it at www.fatsecret.com.

2. Pay off debt. I am going to continue to work on paying off my debt this year and I really want to do as much as I can. To keep myself accountable I will write more about this journey and post monthly debt check-ins showing how much I paid off each month. I have been doing this for myself for the past few months and I have found it really useful to see all the numbers in one place and track my progress. I encourage each of you to do the same.

3. Save money. One of the reasons I am in debt is because I have not had enough in savings to cover sudden expenses or to save to pay for special trips or purchases. So I will work also on saving up to have an emergency savings fund and to save for travel and expenses related to my sister's wedding later this year.

4. Not to be late everywhere I go. I don't know if you suffer from this but I am chronically late. I was even born three weeks late. I am going to make a concerted effort to arrive places on time (or even early! Gasp!) so that I am not selfishly wasting other's time.

5. Spend some time with my God every day. I want to work on strengthening the relationship between my higher power and myself so I want to make a point to spend some time every day in prayer and reflection.

6. Listen more. I am a talker but not as good of a listener so I want to work on listening not just to what people say but what they don't say.

7. Finish grad school. Almost done! Just two more semesters!

What are your new year's resolutions?
