How I'm Saving Today: Moving Sucks

Yep. It does. It's really unnerving to know that all your worldly possessions are boxed away into a rented truck and precariously making their way down the street.

I have been lucky to have stayed in the same apartment for three years, but now that my husband is in Louisiana for a while for school, we cannot afford to send him to school and pay for an apartment simultaneously. We thought we would be able to but, alas, we didn't get private loans. So my parents, who luckily also live in DC, offered for me to move in with them. Just as well really because I love my parents and get along well with them and this way we can pay for my hubby's school with less loans and more cash (ie. cash that used to go to rent).

So I have been boxing up our apartment, cursing myself for not dusting more over the years, taking Claritin cause I'm allergic to dust, and trying to figure out what goes in what box and whether that box goes into storage or goes to my parent's house cause I may need it. Normally I would love the organizing that goes along with packing but it's never enjoyable when you are stressing about grad school papers that need to be written and have to be out of your apartment in a few days. Honestly, I wish now that I had gotten friends to come over to help me pack last weekend cause now it's crunch time. I'm bad at asking for help and have had so much sorting to do that it can be hard to get someone else to do it with me. Well, maybe that's an excuse cause I would much rather watch "The Office" than pack.

So, how's my move frugal? Well, I'm not paying for boxes. I have never actually paid for boxes for any time I have moved and instead have just pilfered empty xerox boxes from work, my mom has done the same, and I have gone recycling bin diving at Starbucks because Starbucks conveniently has sturdy cardboard boxes that they break down and put in a separate cardboard recycling container so they aren't mixed in with the trash. I started to worry that I would be short on boxes so when I went to sign the paperwork for my storage unit (which I comparison shopped for and got a good deal online for), I figured I would break down and buy some boxes from the storage company. I figured they couldn't be all that expensive because, after all, its just cardboard. Same thing my cereal box is made out of.

Wrong. The storage company was selling the boxes for around $3.00 a box, and more for larger boxes. I was so shocked that my penny pinching jaw literally dropped open. F that. I panicked for a bit that I would be moving in trash bags, which is by all means ok, but hard to use for anything that's heavy. But then I remembered that I have always found boxes and I figured that panic doesn't help. So I went home, ate dinner, and sanity returned. I've been working off a motherload of empty xerox boxes that I found in the basement at work and they are all too glad to have me take them so they don't have to cart them off to be recycled. I can take three home every day via the metro, and my mom has been doing the same. Then when I bring over stuff to my parent's house in the evening, I pick up the boxes. That's 6 boxes a day x 5 days this week = 30 boxes. Yeah. I'm fine on boxes :) And I didn't pay a dime for them.

And the moving truck, well I also reserved it online and found the location closest to me with the best online price. And I sold some stuff on Craigslist to raise money to pay for it. Sweet.

So wish me luck this weekend as I haul furniture into my storage unit along with my pack of awesome friends and clean the bejesus out of my apartment (I'm getting that security deposit back damn it!). :)

Frugal Fashion: There, I Fixed It

You all know how much I'm trying to save money, but I also love looking my best. So frugal fashion is definitely right up my alley.

I read tons of fashion blogs, especially frugal ones, and last October one of my favorite bloggers Penny Pincher Fashion posted a look that included this awesome looking bag.

So chic, and only $30.99 from VJStyle. I had never heard of the company before but I loved the look and put the link on my Christmas wish list. My awesome sister bought the bag for me and it shipped directly from China (where VJStyle is located).

Oh, I was so excited to get the bag! And boy was I disappointed when it began to literally fall apart after three weeks.

And it kept ripping. I am not a dainty lady who carries a purse for show. I carry STUFF (and lots of it) in my purse. Yeah, my purse is heavy but I'm not toting around bricks. Purses are made to carry STUFF (and lots of it) so I was appalled at this purse's determination to detach its handle from itself just from normal wear.

Damage control:

I contacted the company and reported this issue. Perhaps this is just a factory reject. The company responded quickly and said they would send me a new purse. Hopefully the new one will last. But what do I do in the meantime? Damage control.

Enter, Solution #1: Clear plastic mailing tape to contain the rips (which had appeared by week four on the other handle as well). I taped the handle so that the tape bore the weight of the purse, not the strap. This has contained the ripping for the most part.

There, I fixed it. But, alas, my chic bag is no longer chic.

Solution #2: Beautiful silk scarf (also Chinese)

My father had picked up this beautiful silk scarf for me while on a business trip to China a few years ago. It seemed to be the perfect accessory to return my purse to its former chic-ness. Luckily, the rips and tape are on the right side of the handles and are primarily concealed under my arm when I carry the purse. The scarf is a great accessory that covers up the tape and tides me over until the replacement comes. No need to shell out cash for a replacement interim purse! Ta da!

What do you think? Frugal fashion or crazy cheapskate?

Just a note:
Kimberly from PPF has great taste and made the right choice in choosing the bag based on look, but didn't know that the company's products were not up to snuff. To be fair, she told me that she knew other bloggers that had bought items from VJStyle and had good experiences. I'm currently awaiting a replacement bag from VJStyle and they have also assured me that their products are normally made to a higher standard. So I'll keep you updated on what happens. If it doesn't work out, I'm gonna get a refund and get a slamming new bag on Hautelook.

Oh, and yes, I did take those pictures on the bus. Hi DC metrobus!

Eversave Deal on Pet Care Rx

Here's another great daily deal today!

Eversave is running a promotion with Pet Care Rx where you can buy a $30 voucher to use online for just $15. That's half price!

I love Pet Care Rx because they have low prices on my dog's flea and tick prevention medicine and they have a Pet Care Rx Points program where you get 1 point for every dollar you spend and 2 points for every dollar spent on prescriptions. Those points add up to cash discounts off future orders, plus Pet Care Rx has lots of promo codes and sends you Scratch & Win game piece with your order so you can win more points for more discounts. Also, if you are a Delta Sky Miles member you can enter your Sky Miles number in the discount code box and get 20 miles per dollar spent, but it cannot be combined with other offers. I love a company that is coupon and discount friendly :)

I definitely snagged this deal today so I can order more flea and tick preventio medicine for my dog when he runs out in a month or so. The deal is good through June 15, 2012 and the voucher is available for use immediately after purchase if you need to use it now. The voucher cannot be used to cover shipping and cannot be combined with other offers, like Pet Care Rx Points or Delta Sky Miles, but you can earn Pet Care Rx Points on your purchase.

I have bought this same deal through Eversave last November and had no problem at all redeeming my voucher. What's even better this time around is that Eversave gifted me a $25 credit for being an amazing customer (why thank you!) and so I can get this deal for free! If you already have an Eversave account check your My Save Rewards balance because maybe you got the credit too. I don't remember getting an email that I had the credit and boy was I excited to see it in there.

If you're not already an Eversave customer, you can sign up for their emails for free here and get $1 off your next purchase. Happy Saving!

Sneakpeeq Daily Deals

I love daily deals sites. They are great for browsing and getting gift ideas, and they offer such deep discounts that I can often buy an item that I would otherwise not be able to afford.

One of my new favorite daily deal sites is Sneakpeeq. They offer deals in three categories: Living, Style, and Taste. They offer home goods, fashion items, and tasty treats at up to 70% off plus you can discover new great brands that you didn't know existed. The basic premise: You see an item that you like, and you click a “Peeq” button to flip the price tag around. Sneakpeeq also offers a new badge and point system when you peeq! If you keep peeq-ing, you can even find cash discounts to spend at the site.

And right now Sneakpeeq is celebrating NEW MEMBERS with a FREE chic silk scarf to brighten your wardrobe—FREE SILK SCARF and FREE SHIPPING! YAY! You all know how excited I get about free stuff!

Too bad I'm already a member and I can't get the scarf :( But you should snag it! Signing up is free so jump on it!

Happy Frugal Valentine's Day!

Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

I hope you get to spend it with people you love and make sure that they know it!

This year my husband and I are in different states so we won't be having dinner together, and since we don't have much disposable income there are no gifts to be mailed or flowers to be sent. And you know what, that's ok.

It's really easy to get caught up in the consumerism of holidays. I especially tend towards self-pity when I think of the things I cannot afford. For instance, I have been seeing these great caramels and truffles on Sneakpeeq that I would love to ship down to my hubbie in Louisiana. Sneakpeeq has great discounts so these items are by no means expensive, but right now it's not in the budget. So instead we have been sending eachother love songs via you tube videos by email. Cheesy? Probably. But it really made my day to see Elvis' "Can't Help Falling In Love" in my email this morning (that's the song we danced to for our first dance on our wedding day).

So, love is in the air and doesn't have to be coming out of your wallet. In what frugal ways are you celebrating Valentine's Day?

Think Thin Protein Bar Coupons

You all know I love free stuff, but what I love even more is free healthy stuff!

Think Thin makes great tasting (no, seriously, they are superb) protein bars in tasty flavors like Brownie, White Chocolate, and Peanut Butter.

The bars have no sugar (or only 3-4g for the Think Thin Crunch bars) and 10-20g of protein. Thank god for stevia and soy protein!

You can try them out on the cheap with coupons from Think Thin's website. The coupon expires March 3, 2012.

These regularly go on sale for about $1.25. In fact, Safeway has had them on sale for weeks at that price. Snag it while its only a quarter!

These are PDF coupons so that means they are a bit different from most other coupons:
1) There is no print limit! Seriously, you aren't ripping the company off. They make PDF coupons intentionally without print limits.

2) They may not scan properly. You may get the angry beep. Some machines may not like the PDF coupon because each bar code is identical. But sometimes there will be no problem scanning them. I have found the best luck with these coupons using self check out machines. I don't know why but they scan right through at self check out and cause an error at some regular cashier stations.

3) Some stores may not accept PDF coupons. I have had my Safeway tell me that they don't take PDF coupons, though haven't had the issue at others. (It's not in their coupon policy though). So just a heads up. Hopefully you have a coupon friendly store, unlike me.

Just a precaution, my local store isn't taking more than one "like" internet printed coupon and will not accept an internet printed coupon for more than 50% of an item's price. You can see my post on this coupon policy discrepancy here.

How I'm Saving Today

Well, there is indeed such a thing as a free lunch...and free breakfast and dinner for that fact.

I'm saving today by signing up for the email lists for the restaurants near my office. Just this week I got three free bagels from Bruegger's Bagels (coupon for Facebook fans, no longer available), a card in the mail for a free lunch at Corner Bakery, and an emailed coupon from Au Bon Pain for a free coffee and breakfast pastry.

So today I enjoyed one of my free bagels for breakfast, cashed in my free lunch card at Corner Bakery, and am doing a mystery shop tonight for dinner tonight!

If you work downtown (like me) or near any restaurants you like, sign up on their email lists and friend them on Facebook. It definitely pays off!

Bruegger's Bagels gives you a free bagel with cream cheese when you sign up for their email list, plus a gift on your birthday.

Right now, Au Bon Pain is giving you a free travel coffee mug when you sign up for their e-club. And I got the coupon for a free coffee and pastry for my one year e-club subscriber anniversary. Plus they email coupons throughout the year, as well as a sandwich coupon for your birthday.

Dear Safeway...

Well, this evening I was terribly disappointed at my local Safeway. I was informed that the store will not accept coupons which make the price of the item less than 50% of it's original price. Seriously??!! This is completely contrary to Safeway's coupon policy.

So, I wrote Safeway a nice little letter through their website.

Dear Safeway,

I frequently shop at store #1369 located at 909 Thayer Avenue, Silver Spring, MD 20910. It is near my home and the employees are friendly. I am an avid couponer and the coupons allow me to stretch my meager grocery budget to help make ends meet each month. I have never had a problem with this Safeway store accepting my coupons, even when my purchase has included many free or heavily discounted items based on combining the coupons with store sales. In fact, I have always considered Safeway quite coupon friendly.

Unfortunately, this evening I was told by Tali, one of the managers, that the store does not accept coupons which are valued at more than half the price of the item. For example, I was purchasing Yoplait lactose free yogurt which was on sale for $.69 a cup. I had a $.30 cents off coupon which she told me I could not use on the yogurt. My store doubles coupons so the value of the coupon would have been $.60, making the yogurt only $.09.

I informed Tali that this policy is contrary to Safeway's stated coupon policy on your corporate website. She told me that it is the store's policy and she would not let me use my coupon. I frequently shop using coupons which allow me to purchase items for less than 50% of their normal price. In fact, I count on being able to use coupons to be able to buy the groceries I need.

I feel that this sudden store change in coupon policy is discriminatory to couponers. I felt embarassed and upset that I was being targeted with this unfair policy. I left the store without purchasing anything at all and I will not return to this location if this policy is in force.

Can you please tell me why this policy has suddenly changed or if this is just a single store's policy change? Can a single store make such a drastic policy change?

I would greatly appreciate your feedback. I have been a loyal Safeway shopper for many years and am terribly disappointed at this turn of events.

Regards,
Alice

Has this ever happened to you?

Looks like I need to start doing some Giant coupon matchups now....

UPDATE Feb 10, 2012:

I received an email back this morning from Safeway corporate apologizing for my bad experience. They said that they would contact the store to resolve this issue. The store manager, John, called me and we reviewed the (apparently secret) coupon policy. The problem appears to be only with internet printed coupons.

Here's what I learned:

There is an internal Safeway memo concerning internet printed coupons that the stores have but the online coupon policy does not reflect. Apparently it is not a new policy but many cashiers are unaware of it.

This internal memo is only in reference to internet printed coupons and it states that:

1) Safeway does not accept internet printed coupons for over $5.00 in value.
2) Safeway does not accept internet printed coupons for free products, except for Buy One, Get One coupons, which it does accept.
3) Safeway only allows 1 "like" internet printed coupon per customer. (Meaning that you can only use one of that printed coupon for that product but can use multiple different printed coupons for multiple different products)
4) Safeway does not accept internet printed coupons for more than 50% of the price of a product.

Points 1 and 2 are pretty standard, but 3 & 4 seem specifically directed to deter couponers looking to get a good deal on their groceries. I informed the manager that this seemed wholly unfair and that the store gets reimbursed the value of the coupon plus an $.08 handling fee, so the store does not take a loss to accept coupons. Understandably there is concern over fraudulent coupons, but is my $1.00 off coupon really gonna be fake??!!

This new policy means that you cannot use an internet printable coupon for $1.00 off Triscuits (for example) when the price of Triscuits is less than $2.00. So when it's on sale for $1.99 and you could get it for $.99, no can-do if you have a internet printed coupon. Those other paper coupons also issued by the manufacturer, yep, you can use those.

So, now I have to start planning my shopping trips entirely at another store or with many less internet printed coupons. Sigh.

I Got Paid!

Online surveys and mystery shopping get a bad rap. Many people think that they are just scams but there are really some great (and legitimate) companies out there that will pay you for your time and effort. And to prove it, here's what I earned from online surveys and mystery shopping last month, among other endeavors. I completed these mystery shops and surveys in the previous month (or earlier) and received the payment this month.

January 2012
$17.09 from Market Force
$31.00 from Service Sleuth
$18.58 from Sinclair Customer Metrics
$10.76 from Corporate Research International
$9.95 reimbursement for shipping from Freeshipping.com
$4.00 refund from Spreebird (deal was cancelled due to vendor problems)
$5.60 from Bank of America Add It Up cash back shopping

Total earned: $96.98

So, what am I doing with this extra cash? Well, some of it went toward my credit card balance but mostly it went into savings for traveling to my sister's wedding in California later this year.

I post these numbers not to brag but to show that you really can make money this way. If I can do it so can you. Debt freedom here we come!
