Budgeting for My Sister's Wedding

Yes, my other sister is getting married too! Hooray!!

My younger sister announced her engagement to her British boyfriend on Christmas! We are so excited for them! They want to set the date for summer 2014 so it's a bit of a ways off. Unfortunately, they have loads of complexities to figure out now with visa issues. Leave it to the border agencies to suck the romance out of a wedding. Sigh.

Anyway, I am really excited to travel to Cambridge, UK to their wedding. I have been to England a number of times but I haven't been able to visit my sister since she moved there in 2006 because I unfortunately didn't make saving up for the trip a priority when I could afford it and for the past few years I haven't been able to afford it. :( But, at least my sister comes home to DC once or twice a year so I still get to see her.

My family and friends are very important to me and traveling to weddings and other important events, or just to see people, means a lot to me. The good thing about weddings is that they nail down a priority date for me to see someone rather than saying, "oh yes, I will totally come visit you", but without a firm reason to go at a specific time the trip can end up staying a dream rather than a reality. Another reason that I want to get my financial house in order is because I want to be able to travel to see my loved ones whenever I want or need to. If there is an important reason to travel (funeral, wedding, baby born), I want to be able to hop on a plane and not have to stress about how I can't afford it.

So, how am I going to make this trip to England happen? I can't afford it, meaning my husband and I are trying to keep our heads above water while paying his tuition and slowly paying off debts, but that doesn't mean I can't make it a priority and save, save, save! No, I don't have the money in the bank to buy plane tickets right now but I can make a plan to make sure I have the money to do so in a year.

In the past, I have planned trips and told myself I would save up for them since they were many months off but I didn't lay down a savings plan so I never set aside money for it. Then I would end up putting it on my credit card or unable to go. Very lame. So I find that a structured plan with monthly savings goals is the best route for me. I did this to save for travelling for my older sister's bachelorette weekend and wedding last year and it really helped.

First thing first, I had to devise a budget. I did a bit of internet research and here's what I roughed out:

Airplane Tickets x2- $2,600.00
Hotel x7 nights- $1,050.00
Rental Car x 7 days- $220.00
Spending $S- $700.00
Bridesmaid Dress- $200.00
Shower/Wedding Gift- $150.00
Hen Party- $100.00
Total= $5,020.00

Yikes! So my savings target is $295 a month for the next 17 months. Ugh. Well, I have to get cracking on more mystey shops and saving more. I am going to look into more ways to increase my income through side work. Maybe freelance article writing? Also, I will try by best frugal tactics to cut this budget, like using Priceline to name my own price for a car rental or hotel. Maybe we can stay with friends or family in the UK. Hmm...

How do you budget and plan for big expenses? Do you see weddings and special events as always worth the cost to be with the people you love?

I Got Paid!

Online surveys and mystery shopping get a bad rap. Many people think that they are just scams but there are really some great (and legitimate) companies out there that will pay you for your time and effort. And to prove it, here's what I earned from online surveys and mystery shopping last month, among other endeavors. I completed these mystery shops and surveys in the previous month (or earlier) and received the payment this month. Some of these mystery shops required me to pay something out of pocket to purchase a good or service (which I get to keep) but I was reimbursed for my purchase and was usually paid an additional fee.

December 2012
Inbox Dollars- $27.41
Rite Aid Rebate- $3.00
Mypoints- $10 BP Gas Card
Social Spark- $13.00
Google AdSense- $.44
Shugoll Research Focus Group- $200.00
MarketForce- $85.16
Coyle Hospitality- $40.84
Corporate Research International- $8.69
Sinclair Customer Metrics- $17.55

Total Earned: $406.09

Whoohoo!! I earned a lot (for me) in December which means I was really busy in November with mystery shops. The big income difference was a focus group that I got to particpate in and they gave me $200 for my time. I love focus groups!

What did I do with this money?

It went mostly into savings to complete our emergency fund. One of our biggest financial problems is not saving (and then using credit card as our savings account, ugh) so my husband and I are starting Dave Ramsey's Total Money Makeover and we used this money to finish Baby Step 1 which is funding our $1000 emergency fund. My husband isn't quite as on board as I would hope but I think that we can work together to get our finances in shape. It's hard to work together when you live in separate places but luckily we communicate about money a lot and try to be open and honest with eachother.

What did you earn last month? What shape are your finances in?

Happy New Year Everyone!

I hope 2013 brings you peace, joy, and some financial security!

For 2012, I made some resolutions. Let's see how I did:

1) Get in shape: Nope. I weigh exactly the same as I did last January. I have used my gym membership and have gotten some cardiovascular benefits I'm sure, but there has not been any real muscle definition or weight loss. Let's put this on again for 2013.
2) Pay off debt: Some progress! I paid off a few small debts and just finished paying off an outstanding medical bill today. Yay progress!
3) Save money: Some progress! Yes! I just started Dave Ramsey's Total Money Makeover and am starting on baby step one which is funding a $1000 emergency fund. We are almost there!
4) Not be late every where I go: Ummm...not really. I have tried and made some progress, then back tracked. Let's try again in 2013.
5) Spend some time with my God every day: I have been intermittent with this. I want to devote more regular time to prayer and meditation in 2013.
6) Listen more: I have tried to practice this and I learn a lot when I watch and listen to people. I'll try to keep it up this year.
7) Finish grad school: Done! Huzzah!

So what are my resolutions for 2013?

1) Get in Shape
2) Save Money (at least have an emergency fund)
3) Pay off more debt
4) Be on time
5) Listen more
5) Pray and meditate regularly
6) Practice patience

Why practice patience? Well, I got a new job in Louisiana where my husband is in school (yay! we can live together again after a year apart!) but I have been waiting and waiting for a start date. Yay fiscal cliff. Ugh.
